Cineflix International Acquires ITN Productions Documentaries

Cineflix International has acquired the international distribution rights to two fast-turnaround documentaries, Tsunami Search and Rescue and Nuclear Meltdown, from ITN Productions, the division of ITN that makes factual, entertainment, news and corporate content.

The deal for the two ultra-topical one-hour films is the first between ITN Productions and Cineflix International and was brokered by Nicola Andrews, Head of Acquisitions.
Nuclear Meltdown is executive produced by Emma Read, Head of Factual and Features, and Tsunami Search and Rescue is executive produced by Chris Shaw, Editorial Director at ITN Productions.
Emma Read said: “ITN Productions is proud to document the compelling story of the nuclear crisis, its impact on the wider world and the future of nuclear power. This topical commission is drawing on our considerable programme making skills, news access and archive resources and we’re very excited about this innovative partnership with Cineflix International.”
Chris Shaw added: “We believe ITN Productions is the pre-eminent producer of high quality fast turnaround productions like these two shows and Cineflix International is the perfect partner to bring them rapidly to the market.”
Tsunami Search and Rescue was commissioned by UK broadcaster Five, where it will air on April 5. It follows the British rescuers and medics that flew to Japan in the immediate aftermath of the tsunami, chronicling their courage in the face of extreme danger, emotional trauma and the fear of a nuclear catastrophe.
Nuclear Meltdown is a collaboration between ITN and Cineflix International with no commissioning broadcaster.
Nicola Andrews approached Read, as the world watched the Fukushima disaster unfold asking how quickly a documentary could be made to help explain what had happened, why and what impact a nuclear catastrophe was likely to have on our planet and our health. The result is an honest, compelling and disturbing film that sets out to answer the all-important question: how dangerous is the Japanese nuclear disaster for the world?
Nicola Andrews said: Whilst Cineflix International traditionally needs a documentary to be commissioned by a third party before taking on the distribution rights, we have been speaking to ITN about commissioning directly with them for some time. In light of their connections with highly regarded journalists and long standing expertise in making news, they were the obvious choice to go to for a timely special on not only the disintegration of the four nuclear reactors in Fukushima, but also but also to document the outcome of previous disasters such as Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and Windscale.’
